HOOOORAYYYYYY!!!!!!! It’s a big day you guys! Meet the Studio DIY x Modernica Confetti Chair!! As you may already know, we are HUGE fans of Modernica and their amazing fiberglass chairs. We’ve got a whole army of them in my favorite bubblegum pink color. So we’re PRETTY excited to announce that we’ve teamed up with them to create a limited edition run of their confetti chair… with a Studio DIY pink base!!!!

Could you think of a more perfect chair!? ‘Cause I SURE COULDN’T!!! Since Modernica is based here in Los Angeles, we got to stop by their factory and see how their infamous fiberglass chairs are made. AND! I even got to sprinkle a little confetti on them!!

Silly, I know, but I had no idea that each of these chairs was made by hand just a few miles from Studio DIY HQ. These fiberglass shell chairs were first designed and sold in the 1950s up through the 1980s. In 2000, Modernica obtained the original presses and equipment and began re-creating these chairs one-by-one and yes, by hand! It was mind-blowing watching the process. They told us that the men who work in the factory making the chairs have been there for years and years (decades, even!) and their expertise in making these chairs is unprecedented. They can look at the chairs and know exactly where the fiberglass is too thick or too thin before covering it in the perfectly-hued resin. I was pretty lucky that they let me jump in on the process… sprinkling some confetti along the way!

After the pre-form was confetti-ed, it went into the press, and resin was poured on. The press then spread the resin over the entire form and when it lifted…

Ta-da! THE CHAIR! It then cools before getting its fancy pink legs!

We picked our most favorite bubblegum-y pink hue for the legs on this baby, and doesn’t it look freaking AWESOME!? You can also purchase the chair with a yellow or orange base, but we of course are partial to the pink.
